ISO President Spoke at the World Internet of Things Convention 2024

2024-11-03

Hello everyone, I am Sung Hwan Cho, President of ISO. It is a great pleasure to deliver you a message at this year’s World Internet of Things Convention.

In this digital age, our world is more interconnected than ever. Data-driven technology is improving efficiency, accuracy and value across sectors – transforming industries, economies and societies globally. It is crucial that this progress actively supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals and bridges the digital divide, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy the benefits.

ISO and IEC are enabling this interconnection. Our joint technical committee on the Internet of Things is developing standards to ensure device interoperability, data security and user privacy. This work is paving the way for technology to seamlessly integrate into our daily lives, enhancing connectivity and building a more equitable and sustainable world. From transport and energy needs to communication and well-being, our standards have a practical impact on people’s lives.

Emerging technologies are at the heart of this smart revolution, and ISO is leading the discussion, bringing together stakeholders and engaging with business, policymakers and end users. Our collaboration with IEC on quantum technologies highlights our commitment to exploring new fields. We are also taking the lead in standardizing bio-digital convergence and the metaverse, shaping the future of industry and society.

The success of ISO and IEC’s artificial intelligence community showcases our collaborative spirit. This hub of innovation brings together experts from over 60 countries, fostering trust and buy-in among users. The standards they develop are laying the groundwork for an all-electric and connected society, enabling seamless interaction between AI technologies and electrical grids, as well as smart devices and connected infrastructures.

However, with increased connectivity come new threats. That’s why safeguarding information assets and managing data security risks are vital for organizations. Our information security management standards are invaluable, offering comprehensive guidelines on risks, principles and controls to ensure the security and privacy of Internet of Things solutions.

ISO and IEC are also transforming how standards are developed and used, through initiatives such as the IEC/ISO SMART programme. The next generation of International Standards will offer timely, tailored content to relevant users – whether humans, computers or machines. They will be embedded into product development supply chains and become integral to daily life, benefiting government, business and society as a whole.

At ISO, we are not just keeping pace with the future; we are defining it. By doing so, we are unlocking the full potential of an interconnected world, driving economic and social development, and making people’s lives easier, safer and better.

Enjoy the Convention!
